Short answer: desiccant lasts until it's saturated. A 5-gram silica gel sachet can absorb about 5 grams of moisture. In a sealed foil bag with dry goods, that can be many months, sometimes over a year. In an unsealed cardboard box in a humid warehouse, it can be exhausted in a few weeks. The question isn't really age, it's exposure.
I learned this in 2021 when I added desiccant to a shipment, didn't seal the poly bag, and then blamed the desiccant for a damp package. The desiccant wasn't dead. It was overwhelmed because I gave it a constant supply of humid air. If your product sits in a sealed bag, desiccant is useful. If the package leaks air, desiccant is just a suggestion.

ESD damage is not always visible, and 'lucky' is not a quality standard.
If you're shipping a boxed product that already has ESD protection, standard bubble wrap is usually fine. The sensitive parts should already be in ESD bags. A practical rule: if the spec sheet says ESD sensitive, buy antistatic bubble wrap.
7. Is it worth buying bubble wrap wholesale or direct supply?
Usually, yes. Bigger rolls cost less per square foot. A 1/2 inch bubble wrap roll, 12 inches by 250 feet, runs roughly $25–$40 based on supplier quotes I gathered in February 2025—verify current pricing. The real question is whether you can use that much before storage becomes a problem.
When I was starting out, a $200 order felt enormous, and I appreciated the vendors who took it seriously. Some of those vendors now get my $20,000 orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. If a supplier treats small orders poorly, that's a useful red flag. But don't assume every supplier with a minimum order quantity is greedy.
